How to Choose a Crib

It may seem like a relatively easy thing to choose, but once you see all your options and keep all your needs in mind, it might make things a little more complicated. In order to narrow down your selection, there are some key elements to consider. But once you make it down this list, you will know exactly the type of crib you want and need.

Safety – The most important thing to consider is the safety of the crib. Is it wobbly? Does it rock back and forth when you tug on it? If so, find something sturdier. If it moves with you testing it, imagine what could happen when your baby is moving in her sleep or when she is old enough to crawl around and stand up. Buying a sturdy crib in the beginning will reduce potential crib injuries. Make sure the openings in the sides of the crib aren’t big enough to get a head stuck in there. There aren’t a lot of things you can control as a parent, but a safe crib selection is one of them.

Longevity – The next question to ask yourself is whether or not you’ll reuse this crib after your future pregnancies. If you want the crib to be around for a wall, look for durability and solid construction. Choosing a whimsical, yet flimsy, crib may look great, but it may not even last through your first child, let alone your second and third. If you do want to use the same crib for all your children, it might be a good idea to also consider a gender neutral crib.

Style – Now that you’re sure the crib is safe and well-made, now you can focus on finding the right crib style. Choose something that speaks to you and that can work with a variety of décor styles. While the other things were precautions, this is the fun part. So open yourself up to new styles and options that you may not have considered before. You never know if you’ll find something you love that wasn’t what you expected.

Once you find the perfect crib, you can then focus on the details so you can pull your vision together seamlessly. Pinpoint fun trends and the perfect color for your nursery, and the rest will fall into place.
